Dancing Spirit

intiaanimusiikki,

By listening to this album you will be able to experience the ancient musical traditions of the native American peoples. These old cultures live on in our modern world of today. We can now enjoy the sheer beauty of the music, and share the inspiration within the music and its spiritual power. A part of the proceeds of this project will flow directly back to the original.

The American Indian traditions normally prohibit recording their music in any way or form, because they feel that this heritage should remain within the intimacy of their own circles. Many Indians fear that the secret ceremonies will loose their special powers if they should fall into the hands of commerce.

The music you will hear on this album - among which social dances and intertribals - is nevertheless just as precious in their opinion.

All the musicians who participated with us on this album were extremely discreet, inquisitive and conscientious before they were willing to share their musical traditions with us, and through us with you. On many occasions they expressed their deep concern about what exactly would happen with their music should they share it with us, and so it is with great pride and joy that we can say we feel very much honoured for the trust our Indian friends ultimately showed us and Oreade.

Crane: Spirit Keeper

intiaanimusiikki,

Lakota Style Flute Spirit Keeper

Daniel's Tsnu-Tina name is Bearcoat which symbolizes strength and warmth. Bearcoat is "one that keeps, protects and shelters the people".

Daniel Crane was originally born at the Tsuu-Tina Nation in Alberta, Canada. He was taught the Dakota/Lakota tradition from an early age, by both his mother and grandmother, values such as spirituality, family, and the importance of laughter. These values have formed in him a strong belief system which can be felt in his performance of this music. As a traditionalist living in a modern world, Dan keeps his people's ways alive through ceremony, songs and the creation of hand-made flutes. Guided by his grandfathers, he carefully fashioned his first wooden flute. Carrying on the tradition today, Dan offers workshops and performances across North America to adults and children interested in learning to make flutes and the music that is created on them. His favorite audience are the children, who are always ready to laugh at his humourous stories and are able to still see the magic around them. His diverse interest in keeping his people's art and traditions alive led to his appointment a Assistant Director for the world-renowned Red Thunder Dance Company.

":Everything is part of the circle of life; everything is part of the song of the Great Spirit. That's the way I see things; it's probably the biggest difference between Native philosophy and non-Indian philosophy, where ideas and actions are put into little boxes, where some things, some days, are thought of as holy, while most other things are not. That is not the Native way.":

Nakai: Desert Dance

 Lisää ostoskoriin

intiaanimusiikki,

DESERT DANCE is my ritual about the everchanging beauty of the San Luis valley and the rain-laden sweep of clouds over Crestone and Lindisfarne in the late summer season of 1989. This improvisational recording session, like SUNDANCE SEASON, was hinted at in the beginning and became a personal reality as the days progressed.

The crisp, still, morning twilight, emblazoned in a starry canopy of dark velvet sky, is at once sanctified by the soulful entreaties of Coyotes in chorus and mellowed by the delicate lowing of a Great Horned Owl calling from a nearby juniper grove. In my morning prayers for guidance, I envisioned my ancestors' experience many generations ago, as the night sentry peered carefully into the predawn stillness from under the warming enclosure of his Buffalo robe, once again acknowledging another late summer day in this sacred place. Overhead, the great Thunderbird races along on a flashing path leaving behind a vaporous trail marking its passing. The Sun is coming!

The Lindisfarne chapel, the site for DESERT DANCE and SUNDANCE SEASON, is situated within the San Luis valley, the world's largest alpine valley at 8,000 ft. above sea level, 100 miles long by 60 miles wide. Surrounded by the Saguache range, the Continental Divide, and the Sangre de Cristos and San Juan Mountains, the valley is sacred ground to the many tribes who have inhabited it over time, including the early pueblo dwellers, Athapascan nomads, Comanche, Kiowa, Arapahoe, Ute, and in the recent past the Spanish settlers, American explorers, and ranchers. Near Alamosa where the Great Sand Dunes lie, is the place of emergence, for the Taos, the site of the Navajo's eastern sacred mountain, Blanca Peak, and the center of the Ute world.

All landscapes have a history, much the same as people exist within cultures, even tribes. There are distinct voices, languages that belong to particular areas. There are voices inside rocks, shallow washes, shifting skies; they are not silent. And there is movement, not always the violent motion of earthquakes associated with the earth's motion or the steady unseen swirl through the heavens, but other motion, subtle, unseen, like breathing. A motion, a sound, that if you allow your own inner workings to stop long enough, moves into the place inside you that mirrors a similar landscape; you too can see it, feel it, hear it, know it.

I discover where giant butterflies burrow and dream. Startle them. They rise in unison, become the sky by imagining rainbows. They are shimmering power in the wet light in this valley they call Beautiful.

It is an honor to walk where all around me stands an earth house made of scarlet, of jet, of ochre, of white shell. It is more than beautiful at the center of the world.

intiaanimusiikki,

It was a faithful evolvement that brought the person place and project together. Celestial Harmonies had long been searching for an appropriate project to record in the Lindisfarne Chapel. At the same time we had been seeking to record Native American musicians who had remained in touch with their cultural past, yet had the openness to communicate with the present day world. Our gratitude to the flutist Paul Horn for introducing us to R. Carlos Nakai, a remarkable Navajo-Ute from Arizona.

The San Luis valley is near the land where the Ute Summer Spiritual Gatherings, generally referred to as the Sun Dances, were and still are being celebrated and this is how this project got its title. In early July, during a break in the recording sessions, the engineer Stephen Hill, Carlos and myself saw a poster in a local restaurant advertising the annual Ute Sun Dance ceremony. We each looked at one another and knew we had a concept and title for the project.

With this recording it has been our wish to bring forth the "Native people's" music as it is today, to the other "people's" of the world, to renew the reverence and rejoice the Spirit.
Ruby McFarland

The Sun Dance

The religious focus of this redemptive ritual includes conscious acknowledgement of the inclusiveness of all life on the Earth Mother upon whom the harmonious survival and well-being of all living things depend. Prayers of supplication, beneficence and renewal for the powers of life are offered in entreaties of pain and suffering by the dancers who forgo any sustenance for the duration of the ritual. Throughout the observance of the Sun Dance, the dancers are encouraged to concentrate on their reasons for dancing, and to meditate on the orderliness of life, the meaning and purpose of the Sun Dance and to be attentive to the acquisition of shamanistic power(s) to benefit all of "the people":

The singers and drum groups are specially selected individuals who accompany and encourage the dancers in their meditations with traditional Sun Dance songs as the dancers execute movements in time to the chanting while blowing into Eaglebone whistles.

On the final day of the Sun Dance, gifts are distributed to visiting dancers from other tribes, the Sun Dance committeemen, assisting staff, the singers, other visitors of note, followed by a general feast for all in attendance.
